Slow Food at Calcutta

Welcome

As the former capital of India, by its old spelling, Calcutta is regarded as India’s intellectual and cultural capital. This ‘City of Joy’ is a city you ‘feel’ when you walk the chaotic back alleys, ride the Hooghly ferries and drop in to the iconic eating joints which dot the city’s landscape.

This is a melting pot of cultures and influences. Right from Wajid Ali Shah influenced Biryani with that ubiquitous potato to the British ruled pre-independence period, Calcutta learned something unique to offer to every discerning palate. No other Indian city ever took pride in a ‘Coffee House’.

While the rest of the world eats to live, the Calcuttan famously lives to eat. From the quintessential Suruchi run by enterprising women, to the origin of Kathi rolls at Nizam, Biriyani from Aminia to the iconic Flurys started by the charming couple of the same name, Calcutta has always been a foodie’s paradise. Whether it’s Chelo Kebab at Peter Cat, delectable Chinese soup at a host of kiosks at Tiretti Bazar or assortments of breads at Nahoum and Sons, cuisine of Calcutta will leave you craving for more.
